Our Values
Earls Court Gallery actively encourages greater conversation about art in the local Hamilton community and across Canada. Whether you are an artist just starting out, an established art collector, or a newcomer looking to explore the art scene, creativity is essential in all aspects of all our lives and directly affects how we understand other perspectives on the world around us.
When you walk into the gallery, without noticing name plates or signatures, you can recognize an artist’s unique style from across the room. At Earls Court gallery, we show you the world through the eyes of local artists that you will not find anywhere else in Hamilton. As you open your eyes to the possibilities, we will kindly answer all your questions about technique, media, and the stories behind each artwork.
Afterall, all of life is a ‘becoming’, a learning process that we all take part in. In our busy lives we need to slow down and recognize what we have done for ourselves and in turn appreciate all that others have done for themselves.
We strive to be different from any other gallery. We embrace change, love to learn, and breathe life into our gallery 9 times a year as we showcase a new art exhibition.
Our History
Earls Court Gallery was established in 1973 by Bob Daniels and Doug Nixon as a print and framing gallery. The location was at 78 George Street in Hamilton's Hess Village. In 1977, the second-floor gallery was opened and featured various printmakers from Open Studio in Toronto (Ann Meredith Barry, Jo Manning, Moira Clarke) and other local artists.
In 1980 we moved to 105 George Street where we continued to represent and exhibit the work of local and Canadian printmakers, like David Blackwood. We also began to exhibit the work of local artists who worked in various mediums such as oil, acrylic, watercolour, and mixed media.
We continued at this location for the next 29 years until September 2009 when we moved into the current and much larger location at 215 Ottawa Street North in Hamilton. This location has a 1600 sq. ft. gallery and a 1000 sq. ft. framing facility. The main gallery space showcases the work of local and Canadian artists. We have approximately 9 exhibitions a year. In January 2013, we added 1,000 sq. ft. of gallery space dedicated to primarily Canadian historically significant works.
Community Contributions
Earls Court Gallery believes that art is not just a luxury, but should be affordable and accessible. We also believe that education of art is key. Earls Court Gallery offers tours of every exhibition to school groups of all ages and to community organizations.
Location
Located on Ottawa Street, the heart of Hamilton's textile district, Earls Court Gallery is a short distance from downtown Hamilton. There is metered street parking in front of the gallery and three large GreenP parking lots. The gallery is also accessible by public transit. Ottawa Street also offers plenty of great shopping and eating destinations year-round.
